"DHCP defines a new 'client identifier' option that is used to pass an explicit client identifier to a DHCP server. In the DHCP Discover packet, the Client MAC address field is generated by the SA and is not a unique identifier. The IVE does not have the VPN Tunneling client's MAC address. The VPN Tunneling client MAC address does not show up on the internal DHCP server because the DHCP Discover packets are initially sent on behalf of the client by the IVE. Uniqueness is ensured by the SA/MAG using the user's session ID in the DHCP Option 61 Client Identifier field. Vendors and system administrators are responsible for choosing client-identifiers that are unique. (For more information on RFC 2131, see the end of this section.) According to RFC 2131 ( "Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol"), each client identifier must be unique. In order for clients to be identified correctly, each client's Client – identifier must be unique among the client-identifiers used on the subnet to which the client is attached. The MAC address IDs on the Microsoft DHCP server are working as expected.
